Even though there has been a global ban on whaling since 1985, Japan has continued to harpoon and slaughter whales in the name of “scientific research”. And this research isn’t pretty, they use explosive tipped harpoons and then drag the whales into their ships. Miraculously, the meat from these “researched” whales ends up in restaurants and on store shelves. And now Japan is going to double the number of whales they butcher (all within an international marine mammal sanctuary no less). But we can put pressure on Japan and get them to stop. Yes we can.

Get this - even though last year had the second highest manatee death toll on record, the state of Florida wants to downlist the manatee from “endangered” to only “threatened”. Why, you ask?
Turns out there’s a calculated effort by special interest groups opposed to boat speed zones and restrictions on development. Well, let’s make a little calculated effort of our own:)

And by “we” I mean the United States. Turns out we’re addicted to oil. Don’t believe me? Why don’t take my word for it. Just ask President Bush:

See. And we pay a pretty steep price for our addiction (and I’m not even talking about what you pay at the pump). But we don’t have to be addicted to oil. The first step we need to take is to convince Ford Motor Company (their vehicles guzzle more gas than any other automaker in the country) to change their ways.

Well, here we are. My first ever blog post for TheActionBlog.com. You’ll see that this blog is going to be a little different from the other blogs you might read. That’s because just about every post (with a few exceptions here and there, like this one) is going to be about an issue on which you can take action to make a difference right from your computer.
The action might be to send an e-mail to the CEO of a corporation, or an alert to your Congresspersons, or maybe even a message to world leaders. I’ve seen these alerts work time and time again, and I’m excited to help spread the word about them, thus making future alerts even more likely to succeed.
You can learn a little bit more about me and this site in the About Us section. There I talk about alerts that have worked in the past and what motivated me to launch TheActionBlog.com. At the time of launch (right now) that section is a little rough but I’ll polish it up shortly.
