What is the Global Warming Myth?
Although there are numerous studies that support the theory of global warming and its relation to climate changes, there are also several other studies that suggest all negative stories about the state of the environment can be summed up as the global warming myth.
Proposals of Global Warming
The global warming myth casts doubts not only on the theory itself but also on its advocates. Many individuals believe that organizations and governments that are pushing for proposals and treaties that support global warming reduction are simply a cover up for their real objective and that’s to increase their ability to generate profit.
Disastrous Effects of Climate Change
Global warming will supposedly lead to huge changes in the climate that the world will not be able to survive. This includes, for instance, having Western Europe suffer a mini ice age. Disbelievers however point out that climate changes are but a natural process of life and that it is something man has survived throughout history using technology and adaptation or man’s inherent instincts to survive.
Greater Frequency and Intensity of Natural Disasters
Detractors of global warming theories point out to the lack of directly relevant data to support the belief that an increased rate of global warming can indeed lead to more droughts and hurricanes, heat waves, and all other types of natural calamities.
Increased Sea Levels
Global warming projections show that increased sea levels could lead to the flooding of coastal cities, which would mean millions or billions of dollars worth of damage. In worst case scenarios, cities in Asia could even be buried completely underwater. The 2004 tsunami has made these projections even more terrifyingly possible.
But critics of global warming theories disagree and again point out to lack of relevant statistical data to support such claims.
Melting of Glaciers
Numerous documentaries, films, and books, including Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, use the example of real-life incidents of glaciers melting at an allegedly alarming rate to portray the effects of global warming.
But detractors have their own real-life example to counter these studies. Mt. Kilimanjaro, which is the tallest mountain in Africa, has its snow caps melting even when temperature in Kenya has been decreasing in recent decades. The melting of Mt. Kilimanjaro’s snow cap is a result of atmospheric moisture and regional land use and such reasons may also be applicable in areas where glaciers have been melting.
Whether or not you believe in the global warming myth, there is no harm in doing what you can now to further improve the state of the environment.
