Simple Ways to Protect Our Environment
You don’t need to become a martyr – or a hero – in order to protect our environment. There are many things you can do from your very home to protect the environment.
Glass
Jars, bottles, and the likes may be reused in various ways. They can serve as food containers, piggy banks, and flower vases. They are also excellent to use in numerous kinds of art. In the event that you’ve run out of uses for old bottles, don’t throw them away just yet. You have another option: sending them to bottle banks for recycling. Just make sure that they don’t contain any plastic or they’d be ineligible for recycling.
Metals
Steel and aluminum cans may be reused to contain small paraphernalia. The good thing about them is that they’re fall-proof unlike glass containers. Just make sure you don’t expose them to water since they’re obviously vulnerable to rust. Again, if you run out of uses for them, you can send them away to recycling factories. They collect all kinds of scrap metals and smelt them for reuse.
Obsolete mobile phone models may also be sent to junk shops and recycling factories. Many of them nowadays have the means to extract scrap metal from mobile phones and maybe other electronic devices as well.
Even batteries may be recycled or reused but you’d have to look for factories that have the requisite technology and machinery to perform this.
Textiles
Give away old clothes to your favorite charities. You can also sell them to raise funds for donations to deserving beneficiaries. Then again, you can also reuse them as rags, blankets, and covers.
Plastic
This is one of the most important types of materials that you should make an extra effort to reuse. Although there are a few varieties of plastic that may be recycled, most are purely non-biodegradable and will therefore remain as waste for scores of years.
First and foremost, you can reduce pollution caused by plastic by reducing use and consumption of it. Bring your own utensils to fast food joints so that you wouldn’t have to use disposable plastic utensils. You should also use your own bags when shopping for groceries.
Ultimately, however, all your actions would amount to the most important personal contribution you can make and that’s by serving as a role model and source of inspiration so that others would be encouraged to protect our environment as well.
