Empower Yourself: Tips for Conserving Rainforests
You don’t need to literally live next to rainforests in order to contribute and save them from ruin. In our previous post, we discussed what makes rainforests magical and virtually our very own Eden on Earth. Unfortunately, we’ve also ended up destroying the precious few rainforests that remain with our very own hands.
Major Threats to Rainforests
Illegal and Unethical Logging – A lot of companies are involved in illegal logging to obtain more timber for manufacturing furniture, flooring, and other objects.
Generate Electricity – Power plants and other factories also purposely destroy rainforest in order to generate more power or electricity.
Inappropriate Agricultural Methods – Many agricultural communities still persist in using slash-and-burn techniques to clear land for grazing, farming, and other needs.
Mining Activities – Many mining corporations clear out rainforests in their efforts to obtain minerals, precious stones, and other vital natural resources
Urban Projects – Even governments are sometimes involved in activities that destroy rainforests for the sake of urban development
What You Can Do to Save Rainforests
When conserving rainforests, you need to remember that no matter what anyone says, the ends never justify the means.
- Patronize only timber-made products like papers and furniture that have been manufactured by companies who only use environmentally safe and sustainable techniques.
- Conserve use of timber made products and energy. With efficient consumption of natural resources, demand for them is lowered, and companies won’t be so keen on destroying rainforests.
- Join non-profit organizations that seek to protect the environment in order to learn more about the cause you’re fighting for.
